He feels newly bonded with him, but he's also becoming a lot like him - he was already having dreams of becoming the wendigo last season. Will does feel closer to Hannibal now, he says, and that's true in more than one sense. Beyond a source of temporary, imaginary comfort for Will, Abigail also served as a mouthpiece here allowing him to do battle with his own conscience: can he still go to Hannibal, after everything? Can he forgive him? Can he love him? The saddest moment by far was the pair of them wistfully imagining what might have happened if they had gone with Hannibal like he planned, and whether "in another world" they might have been a happy little murder family.įorgiveness bookends 'Primavera' - as he murders Abigail, Hannibal asks Will if he will forgive him, and eight months later Will says yes. There was such a sense of poignant dread hanging over all of Will and Abigail's interactions, once it became clear that nobody else could see her, culminating in that lovely parallel montage of Will's body being stitched back together while Abigail's was embalmed. But that's deliberate, because the line does apply literally to Will, who would have died if Hannibal had wanted him to.

HANNIBAL SEASON 3 EP 2 HOW TO

I was fooled for a good couple of minutes after Abigail walked into Will's hospital room, because her explanation about Hannibal knowing exactly how to cut her seemed totally convincing (he is medically qualified, after all!). The walls of reality have crumbled so completely that Will is able to keep Abigail with him on his travels, conversing with her as though she were alive despite knowing beyond doubt that she is dead. So begins a new chapter of TV's great twisted love story!Īs disorienting and dreamlike as 'Antipasto' felt, it's nothing in comparison to this episode, which unfolds entirely from Will's perspective and paints the landscape of his mind as more treacherous and unreliable than ever. And out of this "valentine written on a broken man", Will sees the stag reborn in what has to be one of the most disturbing isolated sequences in Hannibal history, thanks largely to the uncanny, gut-churning score.
